The One That Got Away

As we sit down to celebrate
all our blessings on this day
Let me tell you the story
of the one that got away

I woke up early to go hunting
for the plumpest turkey tom
But little did I realize, that
my plans would all go wrong

I spotted in a distant field
my Thanksgiving dinner bird
I raised my gun to shoot him
then this awful sound I heard

He squeaked and squawked
and he looked at me
As a tear came to his eye
Then he said "please Pilgrim
do not let me die

You see I have a family too
little chicks and a mother hen
They are home now waiting
and on me they do depend

So please kind sir, if you
spare my life
And let me live today
I will forever be your friend
and will never leave or stray"

I got all choked up and misty eyed
and I thought "this bird is right
We do not have many true friends
so I will gladly spare his life"

When we sat down on Thanksgiving day
to partake in our blessed meal
Tom and his family were seated there
eating pumpkin soup as well
